One idea gets confused a lot, so let’s simplify it with cows. Say you’ve got 300 million cows living close together. Some of these cows are old, and they can’t do cow jobs any more. Other cows are younger, but they’ve had hard times, and maybe lost a hoof, or lost a wife, or their cow pension went away. Now, if all the cows pitch in just 6% of their monthly cud, then those old or unlucky cows won’t starve; they’ll have a “safety net” to get by, which is important. 75 years ago today, that idea was signed into law by a man who was rich, energetic, always laughing, and couldn’t walk. It’s one of the best things we’ve ever done.
