Before 1913, you couldn’t vote for your Senators. It was done for you, by your state. Lame, right? Didn’t speak so well to self government, trust in the public will, etc. (Still, everything’s a trade off. Senate bids weren’t affected by lizard people or truck ownership before 1913.)
Biggest glitch in this? You didn’t know who they were picking, because it all went down in secret, smoke-filled rooms, and bribery greased the skids. So, if the price was right, they’d elect a cow. This would be terrible, because cows do not make good Senators. Thanks, Woodrow Wilson!
